AHRQ-Funded Report Shows Promise in Detecting Surgical Site Infections
A new report funded by AHRQ explored ways to enhance the detection and surveillance of inpatient- acquired surgical site infections. The report, “Improving the Measurement of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Risk Stratification and Outcome Detection” focuses on the development and testing of a computer-assisted algorithm for retrospective assessment of electronic medical records, laboratory test results and demographic data to identify patients with potential surgical site infections. The algorithm was able to flag the records that were most likely to have an SSI, reducing the workload of the human reviewers and created significant resource savings.
