La recopilación y la comparación de datos sobre la salud a nivel mundial permiten describir los problemas sanitarios, identificar las tendencias y ayudar a los responsables de tomar decisiones a establecer prioridades.
Los estudios presentan la situación sanitaria mundial puesta de manifiesto mediante la determinación de la carga de morbilidad, es decir la pérdida de salud por todas las causas de enfermedad y defunción, a nivel mundial. Se indican de forma detallada las principales causas mundiales y regionales de defunción y se proporciona información sobre más de 130 enfermedades y lesiones en todo el mundo.
