                       New This Week on HealthIT.gov

In This Issue
The forecast for Friday? Cool, windy and busy here in D.C. today. We are gearing up for National Health IT week and have posted a new webpage – which includes the most current details about a couple of activities occurring that week – a new report released today that looks at what some states are doing to exchange health data across state lines and a few webinars you might want to check out.
National Health IT Week
ONC just launched a new webpage focused on National Health IT Week to raise awareness about Health Information Technology's power to improve the health and health care of patients all across the nation, and at lower cost. National Health IT Week celebrates the ongoing efforts to transform how care is delivered and paid for and how patients engage in their own health and health care.
We have specifically selected themes for each day of Health IT Week that are the key elements to help the nation on the path to interoperability (#interop). Learn more at http://www.healthit.gov/healthitweek/.
For those of you attending in person, we are having a Social Media Meet Up on Monday, after the Consumer Summit. Please e-mail ONC's Social Media Lead, Brett Coughlin (brett.coughlin@hhs.gov) for directions and details.
New Report on State-to-State Exchange
The Western States Consortium’s final report details how ONC collaborated with 13 states in the Consortium to test ways to break down technical and policy barriers to interstate exchange. The pilot aspect of this project successfully addressed provider-to-provider information exchange when Direct addresses of participants are known to each other and when Direct addresses of participants are not known to each other. The report includes detailed analyses of the planning of the pilots and what was involved in their execution. It lays out the critical questions related to trusted exchange that the 13 states and ONC wrestled with during the run-up to the pilots. For more information, check out the Buzz Blog on the topic.
Update on National HIE Governance Activities
In this webinar, representatives from ONC will give an update on national HIE governance efforts, including a brief overview of the ONC Governance Framework for Trusted Electronic Health Information Exchange, Exemplar grantee projects, and National HIE Governance Forum efforts. Since April, NeHC and ONC have brought together over thirty HIE governing entities monthly to discuss, prioritize, catalog some of the most challenging aspects of HIE governance and identify common solutions.   Forum participants will review issues and topics that have been discussed to date including approaches to trust such as: duty to respond, local autonomy, and chain of trust. Additionally, Forum participants will discuss the progress being made in the National HIE Governance Forum’s Privacy and Security workgroup in developing promising practices related to trust.
Speakers:
  • Paul Uhrig, Chief Privacy Officer, Surescripts
  • Mariann Yeager, CEO, Healtheway
  • Dr. David Kibbe, Executive Director, DirectTrust

FDASIA Recommendations
On Wednesday, ONC’s Health IT Policy Committee accepted and approved the recommendations of the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act (#FDASIA) work group. After six months of work, the FDASIA work group suggested focus areas for a risk-based regulatory framework for health IT. Our Policy Chief, Jodi Daniel (@JodiDaniel), Bakul Patel (@_bakulpatel) of the FDA and Matthew Quinn of the FCC, all of whom worked with the work group, penned a blog post about the recommendations and the work of the work group. Please take a look.
