Buckle Up Every Age, Every Trip

Motor vehicle deaths decreased 43% for children age 12 and younger over the last 10 years. However, still more than 9,000 children died in crashes during that period, according to this month’s edition of CDC Vital Signs.
Using age- and size-appropriate child restraints (car seats, booster seats, and seat belts) is the best way to save lives and reduce injuries in a crash, yet thousands of children are at risk because they are not buckled up. Almost half of all black (45%) and Hispanic (46%) children who died in crashes were not buckled up, compared with 26% of white children (2009-2010).
Read this month’s Vital Signs to learn more about this issue and the steps that everyone—including states, communities, health care providers, parents, and caregivers—can take to keep young children buckled up and safe on the road.
