NCHHSTP Newsroom: CDC announces new HIV communication campaign for Latinos

NCHHSTP Newsroom from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today announced We Can Stop HIV One Conversation at a Time, a new national, bilingual communication campaign that encourages Latinos to talk openly about HIV with their family and friends, without stigma or shame.
Developed with input from Latinos across the country and key Latino community organizations, the campaign will reach millions across the country through online, radio and print media advertising, as well as social media outreach. It will be featured at upcoming community events nationwide, including this weekend’s People en Español Festival in San Antonio and a launch event hosted in conjunction with MTV Tr3s on September 4 in New York City.
Latinos make up 16 percent of the U.S. population, but account for 21 percent of new HIV infections each year. Research has shown that open communication about HIV increases knowledge of HIV risk, prevention, and testing. However, many Latinos are not having these important conversations, possibly because cultural norms foster silence about topics like sex: a recent survey found that only half of Latinos had talked to family or friends about HIV in the past year.
