Health IT Consumer Summit 9/15

That calendar you picked up from the Chinese diner around the corner now reads August 1 and the kids will soon be packing up and heading back to school (Yay!). As fall creeps ever closer, don't forget to save the date for the Health IT Consumer Summit, which this year will be Sept. 15.  We hope to make some brand new friends and help clinicians and patients learn about the benefits of the #BlueButton initiative and the #MUS2 view, download and transmit criteria.

Using Health IT to Control Hypertension

As we reached the halfway point in the Million Hearts® challenge – to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017 – ONC and our friends at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation and Million Hearts recently launched the EHR Innovations for Improving Hypertension Challenge. In a bid to put evidence-based tools in the hands of U.S. clinicians no matter where they are, the challenge aims to help doctors use tested protocols to curb this deadly condition. Read the Health IT Buzz blog for more details about the challenge!

Resource Repository Update!

Our Health IT Implementation Resources can help you address your biggest challenges to implementing and making the most of health IT. This robust collection of documents, training videos, and podcasts were designed to provide the right information to the right person at the right time. These resources were developed by the ONC National Learning Consortium (NLC) in partnership with experts in the field. Given that this collection of resources is truly meant to be for YOU, we want your feedback.

Be sure to rate tools you use so other providers know what's useful.

We know that care handoffs can be problematic, so take a minute to look at our updatedtransitions of care document — which is just one of those resources (thanks to our National Learning Consortium peeps!).

Surveillance Guidance

This week the ONC HealthIT Certification Program issued its annual surveillance guidanceto ONC-Authorized Certification Bodies (ONC-ACBs) for the upcoming calendar year 2015 surveillance period. Under the updated guidance, ONC-ACBs will continue to conduct surveillance of the health IT products they have certified to make sure those products perform as expected once implemented and used in a live environment. ONC-ACBs began conducting surveillance in 2014, with a focus on EHR capabilities related to exchange, patient safety, security, and population management. In addition, ONC-ACBs are responsible for assessing health IT developers' processes for receiving and responding to complaints from users of their products. In 2015, ONC-ACBs will continue to prioritize these same elements while incorporating additional refinements and improvements based on their experiences conducting surveillance in 2014. ONC-ACBs must submit the results of their surveillance annually to the National Coordinator, beginning in February 2015.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) report and videos

A new report and accompanying videos from AHRQ is out! "Findings and Lessons from AHRQ’s Clinical Decision Support Demonstration Projects" shows how organizations can successfully develop, implement and evaluate the best methods and approaches for incorporating clinical decision support (CDS) into clinical workflows. The report and accompanying videos show the approaches Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Yale School of Medicine took toward creating processes and tools for translating clinical knowledge and narrative guidelines into formats that can be used by multiple electronic health record (EHR) systems and for implementing CDS across a range of care settings.Learn more about this important initiative
