CDC Announces New Injury Center Director

The Injury Center is pleased to announce that Dr. Frieden has selected Debra Houry, MD, MPH, as the Director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC).  Dr. Houry comes to CDC from the Emory University School of Medicine (EUSOM) where she was an Associate Professor within the Department of Emergency Medicine and an Attending Physician at Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Houry has served as the Director of the Emory Center for Injury Control at EUSOM/Rollins School of Public Health. 

Dr. Houry received her MD and MPH degrees from Tulane University.  Her research has focused on injury and violence prevention in addition to the interface between emergency medicine and public health, and the utility of preventative health interventions and screening for high risk health behaviors.  She has served on a number of boards and committees within the field of injury and violence prevention.  Given Dr. Houry’s long-standing expertise in injury and violence prevention, and her strong experience as a scientist, leader, and partnership builder, we are excited to welcome her to CDC.  Dr. Houry will join NCIPC on Monday, October 6, 2014.

Dr. Frieden extended his thanks to Dan Sosin, MD, MPH, FACP, for serving as the Acting Director of NCIPC for the past nine months. During this time, he provided critical leadership to the Center and helped to advance many priority programmatic and scientific activities, including prescription drug overdose, traumatic brain injury, and sexual assault on college campuses.  Dr. Sosin will return to his position as the Deputy Director and Chief Medical Officer of the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response (OPHPR).
