If you have avoided a natural disaster so far, count yourself lucky, but we would ask you to take a second to think about the benefits of health IT before the storm hits. That is part of the message ONC wants to convey as part of Disaster Preparedness Month with a blog postlaying out the benefits of health IT when the power goes down and Mother Nature takes over. There is also this video featuring National Coordinator Karen DeSalvo (@KBDeSalvo) which you might want to check out.

Consumer Summit and National Health IT Week Updates

ICYMI: We kick off National Health IT Week with our Consumer Summit on Sept. 15 and we have an update: due to overwhelming interest we are moving the Summit to the Mayflower Hotel here in Washington, D.C. It’s still free and everything, but you will want to plan accordingly! Sign up now!

And don’t forget to help us commemorate National Health IT Week. There are lots of activities held during the week of Sept. 15 through 19, including a number of educational webinars. On Thursday there’s one focusing on the 5th building block of our interoperability vision – rules of engagement and governance. Friday we’ll be taking a look at health IT and safety a year after we published the Health IT Safety Action and Surveillance Plan. Stay on top of the action by checking out our National Health IT Week page.

Since we’re talking consumers (or patients for the uninitiated) ONC recognizes that many still don’t know whether they have electronic access to health data or the benefits electronic access provides. The Blue Button Connector is a tool to help consumers figure out where to get their health data. What do you do with your records you got from Blue Button Connector? Check it for errors, and Use it!

Health IT and Safety

ONC Medical Officers David Hunt and Amy Helwig blog about the results of the 2013 National Ambulatory Medical Care Physician Workflow Survey, which is a snapshot of 11,000 physician responses. One of the take away findings was that about 70 percent of respondents said that alerts about medication or lab tests are helpful. We also published adata brief based on the survey, so take a look when you get a minute.
