AHRQ Releases 2014 CAHPS Health Plan Survey Results

Results from AHRQ’s 2014 Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) Health Plan Survey are available. The2014 results are based on the voluntary submission of survey data to the CAHPS Database. The CAHPS Health Plan Survey asks enrollees about their recent experiences with their health plan services and their medical care. The survey measures topics such as how easily consumers got needed care, how often they received care in a timely manner, how often doctors communicated well with consumers and how people rated their doctor, specialist, health plan and health care. Users can access the results in three ways:
  • Online Reporting System – A web-based platform for viewing summary-level comparative results of CAHPS surveys. Allows users to view top box scores, frequency distributions, bar charts and percentiles for these surveys.
  • 2014 Health Plan Chartbook – Presents highlights of survey results in narrative summaries and bar charts.
  • Research Data Files – Researchers may request access todeidentified research data files by submitting an application.
The CAHPS program at AHRQ supports the development and promotion of CAHPS surveys, toolkit materials and comparative databases and provides technical assistance to users. For more information, contact program representatives via email or phone, 1-888-808-7108.

About Comparative Data

Welcome to the CAHPS online reporting system for reporting CAHPS survey results. TheCAHPS Database is the national repository for data from selected CAHPS surveys. The online reporting system contains comparative data for the CAHPS Health Plan (HP) Survey and the CAHPS Clinician & Group (CG) Survey.
Key features of the CAHPS online reporting system include:
  • Top Box Scores display the percent of survey respondents who chose the most positive score for a given item response scale.
  • Frequencies show the distribution of scores for all response options and allow users to run custom displays by selected respondent and plan (HP) or practice (CG) characteristics.
  • Bar charts display a graphical distribution of survey results that show the top, bottom, and middle response categories.
  • Trending (HP only) displays results across the two most recent years of data for composites, overall ratings and individual items.
  • Percentiles display the percentage of health plans (HP) or practices sites (CG) that scored at or below a particular top box score.
  • Report Builder allows users to create custom downloadable reports.

Those that administer the CAHPS surveys according to the CAHPS survey specifications are welcome to participate in the CAHPS Database. In return for submitting data to the CAHPS Database, participants have authorized access to a secure, password-protected Submitter’s Site. This site allows submitting organizations to view their own results compared to relevant benchmarks in order to identify performance strengths as well as opportunities for improvement.
