National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) Updates

National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) Updates

The new public use data files from the 2011-2013 NSFG have been released on the NSFG webpage today http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nsfg.htm

The 2011-2013 NSFG Public Use data files include information gathered from 10,416 interviews conducted between September 2011 and September 2013, with 5,601 women and 4,815 men aged 15-44. Similar to prior data releases, there are 3 data files corresponding to female respondent, female pregnancy, and male respondent records.

The following user tools are available on the webpage:

n  ASCII data files and program statements in SAS, SPSS, and Stata
n  Online, searchable codebooks (Webdoc) with detailed information on each variable included on the public use files
n  User’s Guide with 7 Appendices, including file indexes, recode specifications, and a summary of questionnaire changes since 2006-2010 NSFG
n  Questionnaires in 2 formats (CAPI-lite and CAPI reference questionnaire, or CRQ)

Other highlights of the 2011-2013 file release:
n  Unlike in past NSFG file releases, when much of the data collected in the Audio Computer-Assisted Self Interviewing (ACASI) portion of the interview was released separately under a special data use agreement, the ACASI data are included in the main public use files for 2011-2013
n  The REGION recode, previously only available through the Research Data Center, will now be available for public use, using a special data use agreement similar to that used previously for the ACASI data files. Details for accessing REGION are available on the NCHS website under “Other data files.”
n  In lieu of the contextual data files NSFG has assembled in the past, we are providing adata file with the state and county FIPS codes (based on the respondent’s address at the time of the interview) which will be accessible only through the NCHS Research Data Center.  This file will enable researchers to merge any contextual data from other sources with the NSFG survey data.

The first report based on these new 2011-2013 data has also been released todayhttp://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db173.pdf
