NCHHSTP Newsroom: CDC leading $185 million HIV prevention efforts for gay men & transgender people

Today, CDC announced more than $185 million in funding to fight HIV among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people – particularly among African Americans and Latinos, including:
  • Up to $125 million to help state and local health departments expand the use of two new, powerful HIV prevention strategies: pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for MSM and transgender people who are HIV-negative but at substantial risk, and ongoing medical care and antiretroviral treatment for people living with HIV to prevent transmission to others.
  • Up to $60.5 million from the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Minority AIDS Initiative Fund to support efforts tailored to meet the unique HIV prevention and care needs of gay and bisexual men of color.
MSM account for more than half of the estimated 1.2 million people living with HIV in the United States and the most recent CDC data show increases in both HIV incidence and diagnoses among MSM, with stark increases among young MSM of color. That’s why CDC is leading new efforts to scale up the most effective prevention strategies to fight HIV among these populations.
