What's Happening in Health IT

In This Issue

For those of you who didn't make it up to the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) meeting in Chicago this week ... maybe next year? In any case, it was a busy week. We issued a new grant opportunity to support community health information exchange (HIE), updated the privacy and security guide and – late last week – issued a report to Congress about information blocking. Read on!

New Grant Opportunity for HIE

The Community Interoperability and HIE grant we issued Tuesday will make a total of $1 million available to up to 10 awardees.  These grants will focus on extending health information beyond those currently eligible for the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs. The focus of the new funding opportunity – applications for which are due June 15, 2015 – will be to specifically help communities create opportunities for post-acute care and behavioral health providers who may not be connected. It’s all about interoperability across the care continuum.

Privacy and Security Guide Update

This past Monday, we released Version 2.0 of the Guide to Privacy and Security of Electronic Health Information. In the updated Guide you will find practical scenarios that explain when a business associate (BA) relationship forms, suggested questions health care providers may want to ask their health IT product developers, and a seven-step approach for implementing a security management process.  Read the blog post and our updated guide!

Health Information Exchange and EHR Adoption Among Hospitals On The Rise

Hospitals are upping their game when it comes to health information exchange (HIE) and EHR adoption. New data briefs published on Wednesday show that three-quarters of non-federal acute care hospitals have adopted a basic EHR and electronically exchange clinical information with outside providers. Data from the American Hospital Association's Annual Health IT Supplement show that "more than six in ten hospitals electronically exchanged health information with outside hospitals – a one-year increase of 55 percent," which is highlighted in our blog post.  Check out the new data briefs on the HealthIT.gov

Information Blocking Report

In the report to Congress we issued late last week we define information blocking: "When persons or entities knowingly and unreasonably interfere with the exchange or use of electronic health information." Read our blog post and the new report.

Innovator Hangout: HIPAA 101 for Entrepreneurs

Did you know that HIPAA not only protects patient information, but also gives patients the legal right to access their own health data? Companies developing consumer-facing apps and products will play a vital role in enabling patients to retrieve their information from providers and payors, and allow them to use that information in a meaningful way. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn more about the HIPAA privacy rule and its impact on health IT innovation from the experts during a Google+ hangout on Wednesday April 29 from 3pm to 4pm. Lucia Savage, ONC's chief privacy officer, and Jocelyn Samuels, the director of the HHS Office for Civil Rights will be hanging out with Chas Ballew, from Aptible, so be sure to check it out!

The Joint Commission Offers CEs for Health IT Safety Course

You may have missed the recent Sentinel Event Alert, "Safe use of health information technology," by The Joint Commission. In conjunction with the alert, The Joint Commission is offering a free continuing education course, "Investigating and Preventing Health Information Technology-Related Patient Safety Events," developed with funding by ONC. In the course, participants will learn:
  • How to identify, report and address health IT-related safety concerns
  • Where and how a process might fail before it actually does fail
  • Ways to reduce the likelihood of health IT-related harm in the future
The course offers CE credit for physicians, nurses, health care administrators, and health care quality professionals (ACCME, ANCC, ACHE, CPHQ). For more information, including a short video and free downloadable infographic, visit The Joint Commission's Safe Health IT Saves Lives Web page.
