A new AHRQ report examines the use of health IT in ambulatory care practice redesign. “Examining the Relationship Between Health IT and Ambulatory Care Workflow Redesign” documents how workflow changed in six primary and specialty care medical offices after health IT systems were implemented. After health IT system implementation, clinicians and staff changed the amount of time they spent doing different tasks such as communicating with each other via computer; using a computer for entering, processing and reading information; using paper to communicate; and talking. Across the offices, the amount of time spent at the nurses’ stations, in exam rooms, and in triage areas showed statistically significant changes after health IT implementation. The study also examined the number of interruptions experienced by staff and the amount of time spent completing clinical documentation using time and motion data.
