Planning and Implementing Screening and Brief Intervention for Risky Alcohol Use: A Step-by-Step Guide for Primary Care Practices

Description

This guide provides a process and resources to help primary care practice staff plan and implement an alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) to identify and assist patients who may be drinking too much. Alcohol SBI is a clinical preventive service recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force for all adult patients. The guide lays out each of the steps required to plan, implement, and continually improve this preventive service as a routine element of standard practice. It shows how this service can be adapted by any primary care practice and helps them best plan for their unique situation. 

The guide consists of 10 steps arranged in 4 major sections:

1. Laying the groundwork
2. Adapting alcohol SBI to your practice
3. Implementing alcohol SBI in your practice
4. Refining and promoting

The appendixes include forms, fact sheets, screening instruments, and other materials.
