Judith’s #GetCovered Story: Getting Care for the Caregiver

I’m a full-time caregiver for my husband, who has Multiple Sclerosis. While he is covered by Medicare, I could not afford health insurance for myself for many years. It was a scary time, and I was fortunate that I didn’t have any major health problems. If I had to go to the doctor, I had to pay out-of-pocket.
Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, I was finally able to get quality coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace for about $80 a month after the tax credit.
Since getting health insurance, I’ve been to the doctor several times: once for a general physical, because I hadn’t had one for years, and another time to check out a shoulder problem, which may require surgery. I’m so glad that surgery will be covered if I need it. I would not be able to afford it otherwise.
One of my doctors also referred me to an ear specialist. My kids used to roll their eyes and tease me when I would ask them to speak up or repeat themselves. I was just getting old, they said. But it turns out I have a perforated ear drum and probably will need a hearing aid.
My copays for these doctor visits were just $10. It’s been a blessing. But it’s also a relief. I now can know if I have a health problem and what it is. Knowing is always better than worrying about what might be.
I’ve recently received a notice that my premium is going up, so I’m going back to the Marketplace to shop for a new plan. I’ve already seen a couple of plans that look affordable. I just have to decide whether to choose a plan with a higher monthly premium but lower deductible, or one with a lower premium and a higher deductible.

But whatever I choose, I know I’m going to enroll in a new plan by December 15, which is the deadline for coverage that starts on January 1.
