The European Commission's DG CONNECT and HHS have jointly updated the next version of the Transatlantic eHealth/health IT Cooperation Roadmap (Transatlantic Roadmap) that guides European and US cooperation on health IT and eHealth. The EU and US have agreed to continue activities around two work streams: health IT standards and workforce development. As part of the updated Transatlantic Roadmap, a new third priority area focusing on innovation was added.
The goal of this new priority area is to encourage innovation in the eHealth/health IT industry, as well as ensure linkages to the other two Transatlantic Roadmap work streams. Both the EU and US are simultaneously seeking public feedback and comments to the draft Transatlantic Roadmap byMarch 15, 2016. Please take a minute to look at the draft of the Roadmap and feedback questions. Also, the EU and US will be hosting a live webinar tentatively scheduled for February 25, 2016 to discuss the Transatlantic Roadmap. We will send out more information about the event in the coming weeks. Please save the date!
In July 2015, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) awarded AcademyHealth $2.2 million to lead the Community Health Peer Learning Program (CHP). Through the CHP program, communities will identify data solutions, accelerate local progress, disseminate best practices and learning guides, help inform national strategy around population health challenges, and align with other delivery system reform efforts driving toward better care, smarter spending of health care dollars, and healthier people.
Following a competitive National Call for Applications, AcademyHealth announced the 15 communities - five Participant Communities and ten Subject Matter Expert Communities - selected to participate. Please visit the AcademyHealth website for information on each of the 15 communities selected.
ONC is pleased to announce that the 2015 Edition Certification Final Test Method is available and can be accessed on the ONC Health IT Certification Program webpage. We would like to thank all stakeholders for the robust and valuable comments made during the two public comment periods for the draft test procedures and acknowledge your engagement was vital to producing the final test procedures and tools. The 2015 Edition Test Method outlines the requirements for evaluating conformance of health IT Modules to the certification criteria defined in the ONC 2015 Edition Final Rule (45 CFR 170.315) published in the Federal Register on October 16, 2015. Additionally, you will find a Certification Companion Guide (CCG) for each criterion which provides a comprehensive resource of clarifications most pertinent to health IT developers.
**Please note, a few criteria do not have final test procedures approved as the conformance tools are still under development.
CMS is extending the comment period for the Certification Frequency and Requirements for the Reporting of Quality Measures under CMS Programs RFI. The RFI originally had a 30-day comment period with comments due February 1, 2016. Now, it will have a 45-day comment period with comments due February 16, 2016.
The RFI solicits feedback on several items related to the certification of electronic health records (EHR) products used for submitting quality data to CMS quality reporting programs. Specifically, CMs is requesting feedback on the frequency to require recertification, the number of clinical quality measures (CQMs) a certified EHR product should be required to certify to, and testing of certified EHR products. Agencies across the federal government are working on President Obama’s Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI), which is an effort to revolutionize how we improve health and treat disease. The goal is to accelerate biomedical discovery and give clinicians new tools and knowledge to tailor treatments to individuals. The White House released a one-year update on what agencies, including ONC, are doing to advance this program. Read the update
A report from CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics found that use of certified EHR systems increased from 2013 to 2014. Key highlights of the report include:
- Physicians with certified EHRs have higher rates of electronic exchange with providers outside their organization, than providers with a EHR that isn’t certified
- Physicians without certified systems are significantly more likely to not share information electronically
- Across all the trading partners measured, physicians with certified EHRs are much more likely to electronically share information, and more likely to do so with providers outside their organization
The comment period will be open for about 60 days and will end at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 21, 2016. If you need more time to submit comments, please contact Chris Muir before the March 21, 2016 deadline. An extension of up to 30 additional days may be granted.
