FDA Investigates Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo Linked to Pistachio Nuts Produced by Wonderful Pistachio and Almond
What is the Problem and What is Being Done About It?
The FDA, CDC, state and local officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo illnesses linked to pistachio nuts produced by Wonderful Pistachios, located in Lost Hills, California.
The CDC reports that 11 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Montevideo have been reported from nine states: Alabama (1), Arizona (2), Connecticut (1), Georgia (1), Michigan (1), Minnesota (1), North Dakota (1), Virginia (1), and Washington (2). Two people have been hospitalized. There have been no deaths. Reported illness onset dates range from December 12, 2015 to February 9, 2016.
Collaborative investigation efforts of the FDA, CDC, and the California Department of Public Health indicate that pistachio nuts produced by Wonderful Pistachios are the likely source of this outbreak. Of nine people interviewed, eight (89 percent) reported eating pistachios the week before illnesses started. Of these eight, five reported eating Wonderful brand pistachios.
The FDA collected product samples from a firm supplied by Wonderful Pistachios in January 2016. Whole Genome Sequencing confirmed the samples were highly related to cases of ill people. Following a conference call with the FDA and the CDC on March 8, 2016, Wonderful Pistachio initiated a voluntary recall
of pistachio nuts. The pistachio nuts being recalled are sold under the brand names Wonderful, Trader Joe’s, and Paramount Farms. The FDA is working with the firm to facilitate the recall.

What are the Symptoms of Salmonella Infection?
Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.
How Soon do Symptoms Appear After Exposure?
Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.
What are the Complications of Salmonella Infections?
In some people, the diarrhea may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized. In these patients, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics.
Who is at Risk?
Children are the most likely to get salmonellosis. The rate of diagnosed infections in children less than five years old is higher than the rate in all other people. Children younger than five, the elderly, and those people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections. It is estimated that approximately 400 persons in the United States die each year from acute salmonellosis. Consumers should not eat recalled pistachios produced by Wonderful Pistachios.

Restaurants and retailers should not sell or utilize any recalled pistachio nuts from the specific lots listed above. Restaurants and retailers should dispose of any of the listed pistachios by throwing them in the garbage. Restaurants and retailers should also be aware that the recalled pistachios may be a source of pathogens and should control the potential for cross-contamination of food processing equipment and the food processing environment. They should follow the steps below:
- Wash hands with hot water and soap following the cleaning and sanitation process.
- Retailers, restaurants, and other food service operators who have processed and packaged any potentially contaminated products need to be concerned about cross contamination of cutting surfaces and utensils through contact with the potentially contaminated products.
- Regular frequent cleaning and sanitizing of food contact surfaces and utensils used in food preparation may help to minimize the likelihood of cross-contamination.

People should not eat any pistachio nuts from the lots listed above. If they have any of the listed pistachios, they should throw them in the garbage.
People who think they might have become ill from eating possibly contaminated pistachio nuts should talk to their health care providers.
