The Need to Improve Informed Consent Procedures in Hospitals |
The journal Health Affairs published an article by AHRQ’s Cindy Brach, a Senior Health Care Researcher, as part of a special issue on patients’ and consumers’ use of evidence. “Even In An Emergency, Doctors Must Make Informed Consent An Informed Choice” recounts Cindy’s personal experience when hospital residents wanted to give her father medicine to dissolve a suspected blood clot. Cindy recalls how residents pressured her to consent when she did not understand the risks and benefits, and reflects on what it will take for hospitals to reform their informed consent procedures to help patients and families make informed choices.
