Addressing the Threat of Zika on the Ground in Puerto Rico

Dept. of Health & Human Services
We’re doing everything we can to support Puerto Rico and address the threat of Zika. Last week, Secretary Burwell visited Puerto Rico to hear directly from island officials, community members and HHS staff on the ground about what’s working and how we can strengthen our efforts to prevent, detect, and respond to the mosquito-borne virus.
Our team at the CDC Dengue Branch in San Juan is coordinating mosquito surveillance, helping Puerto Rican labs manage the increased demand for testing and research, working with the community to distribute Zika prevention kits and educating the public on what they can do to protect themselves.
We travelled to Loíza to visit El Concilio de Salud Integral de Loíza, a federally qualified health center that received $250,000 in new funding to expand its services and community outreach efforts. HHS provided $5 million in total to help 20 community health centers across the island increase access to family planning services, outreach and education services, and more. At El Concilio, we met with a group of young Puerto Rican women who shared their experiences in taking steps to prevent the spread of the virus, which is a cause of serious birth defects, such as microcephaly.

The HHS team is grateful to the Puerto Rican community and our team on the ground for their strength, resilience and commitment to the response effort. That strength, resilience and commitment will energize our efforts to reduce the risk of the Zika virus and safeguard the health of people across Puerto Rico and the continental United States.
We’ve highlighted the Secretary’s trip in photos.
