Topics covered in Webinar. If you are working in any capacity to improve hospital quality and patient safety, this Webinar is for you. Increasingly, hospitals are integrating one or more of the AHRQ Quality Indicators into their performance measurement and improvement activities, spurred in part by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ use of the AHRQ patient safety composite measure, PSI 90, in their Hospital Value-Based Purchasing program, Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) Reduction program, and Hospital Compare public report. To support hospitals in their quality improvement efforts, AHRQ has updated and enhanced its ‘Toolkit for Using the AHRQ Quality Indicators: How to Improve Hospital Quality and Safety’. The QI Toolkit is menu-driven, allowing hospitals to select the resources that are most appropriate to their improvement priorities and capacities. Each of the tools is – by design – adaptable to the needs of an individual hospital. Pam Owens, PhD, senior research scientist at AHRQ, will lead off the Webinar by providing a high-level overview of the AHRQ QIs, including a discussion of the most recent versions of ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS software. RAND Corporation’s Peter Hussey, PhD, senior policy researcher, and Courtney Gidengil, MD, MPH, physician scientist, will review featured tools, including clinical best practices for 25 of the QIs, documentation and coding practices, a QI prioritization worksheet, guidelines for calculating return on investment (ROI), slide presentation templates for both senior leadership and frontline staff engagement, and new pediatric content. Ellen Robinson, PT, a clinical quality specialist at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, will describe how her hospital used the QI Toolkit specifically to reduce preventable venous thromboembolism.
