As highlighted in a new ONC blog post, security breaches and ransomware attacks in the Healthcare and Public Health sector are on the rise. Criminal cyber-attacks against health care organizations are up 125 percent compared to five years ago, replacing employee negligence, and lost or stolen laptops as the top cause of health care data breaches.
To enable better dissemination of threat information, ONC and the HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) recently released two Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) to build the capacity of an Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (ISAO).
ONC’s updated Quick Stats visualize the top vendors for hospitals and ambulatory providersparticipating in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program. The Quick Stats split out the total providers that reported a vendor's certified technology by the technology's certification edition: either the 2011 or 2014 edition. See each Quick Stat for graphical and tabular visualizations, as well as access to the summarized data.
Health IT is a proven tool that can help EMS providers quickly and easily share patient data with hospitals and emergency departments to provide decision support, prepare for an individual’s arrival, and contribute to a better longitudinal health record.
ONC recently developed two documents for Health Information Exchange (HIE) organizations and EMS officials to share with their state and community partners. These resources promote a better understanding of the importance of health information exchange and emergency medical services.

In February, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services provided a guidance letter to States that allows the use of Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) funds for expenditures related to electronically connecting Eligible Providers to other Medicaid providers, including EMS, to share health information and help Eligible Providers meet the Meaningful Use objectives.
ONC announces Phase 1 winners of Consumer Health Data Aggregator and Provider User Experience Challenges
ONC announced the Phase 1 winners of two app challenges to make electronic health information easier to access and use for both consumers and providers. Applicants to the Consumer Health Data Aggregator Challenge and the Provider User Experience Challenge were challenged to use the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) standard and open application programming interfaces (APIs), which are resources that make it easier to retrieve and share information superseding what currently exist in most EHRs.
The four Consumer Health Data Aggregator Challenge winners are

- HealthCentrix
- Medyear
- MetroStar Systems
The four Provider User Experience Challenge winners are
- Herald Health
- PHRASE Health
- University of Utah Health Care/Intermountain Healthcare/Duke Health System collaboration
- WellSheet
Both challenges now move to Phase 2, where the apps themselves will be developed and evaluated, with submissions due November 7, 2016.

ONC has updated the beta version of the Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture (C-CDA) scorecard which will allow for the scoring of C-CDA 1.1 documents in addition to C-CDA 2.1 documents. The SITE C-CDA Scorecard is a benchmarking tool designed to enable health care providers, health IT implementers, and health IT developers compare how the C-CDAs created by their health IT stack up against the HL7 C-CDA implementation guide and HL7 best practices.
ONC's HealthIT.gov/SITE is a centralized collection of testing tools and resources. SITE is designed to assist health IT developers and health IT users evaluate technical standards and maximize the potential of their health IT implementations.
