New EIRB streamlining Military Health System research processes

LAunched in April 2016, the new web-based Electronic Institutional Review Board (EIRB) makes it easier for Department of Defense (DoD) medical researchers to submit and share data across the Military Health System (MHS) and with partner agencies. The modernized EIRB was developed for researchers by researchers at the investigator and institution level for the submission, management and regulatory oversight of research protocols, supporting documents and scholarly products.
Lt. Col. Imelda Catalasan and Lt. Col. Brandi Ritter spoke to medical researchers about how they can optimize use of the EIRB which standardizes processes, allowing them to be more transparent, more efficient and more collaborative. According to Catalasan, the new EIRB application is intuitive, taking users through standardized templates with smart forms and embedded logic that guide research teams through the entire submission process.
Ritter explained how the goal is to eliminate redundancies and differences across the MHS and DoD and to harmonize the research process enterprise-wide. With all new technology, challenges are expected. It continues evolve as new recommendations and requirements are gathered, prioritized and approved.
The EIRB is fully operational at several sites – including Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, the Naval Medical Center San Diego, among others. Researchers can participate in training webinars and download training materials to get help with using the EIRB. For technical assistance, they should
