Psychological impact and recovery after involvement in a patient safety incident: a repeated measures analysis.

Research demonstrates that involvement in adverse events can have a significant effect on providers' emotional health and increases the risk of burnout. Investigators surveyed more than 900 clinicians involved in a patient safety incident across 33 Belgian hospitals to assess factors influencing both the psychological impact of the event and the recovery. Among other findings, the study showed that supportive environments reduced the psychological impact of the incident on the provider. The authors concluded that health care organizations should focus on appropriately supporting providers involved in patient safety events.
