It is my pleasure to announce the selection of David C. Goff, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., as the next Director of the NHLBI Division of Cardiovascular Sciences (DCVS), effective November 28, 2016. A distinguished cardiovascular epidemiologist and NHLBI-funded principal investigator, Dr. Goff knows the experiences of the NHLBI community firsthand, and has the leadership skills to effectively foster its collective efforts.
Over his career, Dr. Goff has published more than 280 peer-reviewed articles. As a principal investigator of NHLBI-supported clinical networks within the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) Trial and the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT), he has developed a deep understanding of clinical trial design, operation, and execution. In addition, during his term as Chair of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study (CARDIA) Steering Committee, Dr. Goff collaboratively engaged leading cardiovascular scientists from multiple academic health centers in one of our important and productive cohort studies.
Since 2012, Dr. Goff has served as the Dean of the Colorado School of Public Health. Prior to that, he served as Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention in the Division of Public Health Sciences at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
In addition to his impressive career as an investigator, Dr. Goff has provided scientific direction for critical efforts across NIH as well as for the NHLBI specifically. Most recently, he served as a member of the NHLBI Guideline Executive Group and as Co-Chair of the NHLBI Risk Assessment Working Group. Dr. Goff’s legacy of service with professional organizations, including serving as the Chair for the American Heart Association’s Council on Epidemiology and Prevention and its Council on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research, demonstrates his ability to convene groups, achieve consensus, and produce results.
Dr. Goff received his M.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill and his Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He completed his clinical training in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals.
Given Dr. Goff’s extensive education and record of accomplishment, I am confident in his ability to foster a cardiovascular research program across the spectrum of basic, translational, clinical, and population research.
Dr. Goff and I share a commitment to nurture our extramural cardiovascular researchers, and to cultivate a cardiovascular sciences implementation plan for the NHLBI Strategic Vision. We look forward to continuing to work with you as we support research to enhance the cardiovascular health of the nation.
