Today ONC released the data brief, Electronic Capabilities for Patient Engagement among U.S. Non-Federal Acute Care Hospitals: 2012-2015, which highlights the significant increase of patient engagement functionalities since 2012. Some specific functionality that had significant increases among hospitals includes the capability to enable patients to view, download, and transmit their electronic health information. The 2015 data also shows the disparities between large hospitals and other hospital types in possessing these capabilities. Read more on the ONC Buzz Blog.
Health Level Seven® International (HL7®) and ONC announced the winners of the HL7 Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture (C-CDA) Rending Tool Challenge. This challenge was launched in an effort to help clinicians better manage relevant C-CDA data. The two winners are Bryn Lewis, PhD, a principal software development consultant at Intelsoft in Melbourne, Australia and Will Tesch, CEO of HealthLX Inc. in Grafton, Wisconsin. ONC and OCR have updated the Security Risk Assessment Tool. The SRA is designed to help small and medium-sized health care provider organizations and business associates with their security risk analysis requirement. New features include compatibility with Windows 10, a “Save As” feature, and improved reporting. Visit HealthIT.gov to download the revised tool and user guide.
ONC recently transferred all data from the old Certified Health IT Product List (CHPL) to the new Open Data CHPL and added the ability to generate CMS EHR Certification IDs. Additionally, CMS State Medicaid Administrators and other stakeholders can now access CMS EHR Certification ID validation data through the new CHPL’s APIs.
Because CHPL 4.0 was shut down on September 8 you should visit Open Data CHPL on HealthIT.gov for all your CHPL needs.
ONC’s Health IT Quick Stat, U.S. Hospital Adoption of Patient Engagement Functionalities, has been updated with 2015 data. The updated Quick Stat shows continued gains in patient access to health information and medical records at non-federal acute care hospitals. Patient access to view, download, and transmit health information, as well as patients’ ability to securely message with a health care provider all increased significantly from 2014 to 2015. These capabilities are a cornerstone of federal payment policies and financial incentives to accelerate patient access to health information and medical records at U.S. hospitals.
ONC updated the EHR Products Used for MU Attestation Public Use File (PUF) with Medicare EHR Incentive Program data through July 2016. The PUF contains a time series of all eligible hospital and health care professional attestations through the Medicare EHR Incentive Program and the certified health IT products reported by those providers for each year. The dataset is available in open format with complete documentation and explanation of the data through the Health IT Dashboard.
In the coming weeks, ONC will release the Report on the Safe Use of Pick Lists in Ambulatory Care Settings: Issues and Recommended Solutions for Improved Usability in Patient Selection and Medication Ordering.

Three weeks ago, ONC published the draft 2017 Interoperability Standards Advisory (ISA), a coordinated catalog of standards and implementation specifications available for use by the health IT industry to meet interoperability needs. Public comments will be accepted until 5 p.m. ET on Monday, October 24, 2016. View and comment on the new online version of the ISA. These comments will be used to inform the final 2017 ISA.

The Pew Charitable Trusts will host a Health IT Usability webinar on Wednesday October 5th at 4:00 p.m. The webinar will feature Dr. Andrew Gettinger, ONC CMIO and Executive Director of the Office of Clinical Quality and Safety, Dr. Peter Provonost, MD, PhD and Dr. Josh Rising from Pew to discuss this important safety topic. The primary subject of the webinar will be last year’s meeting convened by the Pew Charitable Trusts, in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality, Since then, several reports have also looked at ways to address EHR usability and patient safety. An online fact sheet incorporates findings from the meeting and recent publications, and outlines a comprehensive approach to address EHR usability.
