New Patient Safety Announcement

Patient safety is always our top priority. We strongly recommend that electronic health record (EHR) users keep up with all EHR upgrades and patches as a matter of patient safety. As this recent safety announcement by eClinicalWorks (eCW) stated, we also encourage any clinicians, prescribers, pharmacists, or patients and their family members and caregivers who experience safety issues or unexpected software function related to eCW software to report it both to eCW and through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s (ONC) website at www.healthit.gov/healthitcomplaints.

Webinar: Health IT Certification - Final Rule

Join ONC for one of two webinars where the Health IT Certification Program: Enhanced Oversight and Accountability Final Rule will be discussed . The Enhanced Oversight Final Rule updates the ONC Health IT Certification Program by creating a focused ONC direct review regulatory framework, aligning testing lab oversight with the existing processes for ONC-Authorized Certification Bodies (ONC-ACBs), and building a more comprehensive set of publicly available ONC-ACB surveillance results. The Final Rule will be effective on December 19, 2016.

NEW: Applied Clinical Informatics Review - Mind the Gap

ONC and colleagues published a new review that identifies usability and safety challenges and practices during electronic health record implementation. This review takes on the gaps between literature and key stakeholders across six emerging themes: cost and resources, risk assessment, governance and consensus building, customization, clinical workflow and usability testing, and training. Read more about the current state and gaps that should be closed to improve health IT usability – a major requirement for safer, better care.
