New Prescribing Guideline Resources

CDC: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Your Online Source for Credible Health Information

CDC continues to work to address the growing epidemic of prescription opioid overdose in the country. In March 2016, CDC released the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain, to encourage safer, more effective pain management. In addition, CDC has continued to develop resources to help providers and patients learn more about topics such as the risks of prescription opioids, open communication about opioid therapy, and nonopioid therapies that are effective with less harm.

New Patient and Provider Videos
CDC has produced a suite of videos to help improve communication between prescribers and patients about prescription opioids. These videos complement the CDC Guideline and aim to educate patients and providers about opioids and their risks. Available on YouTube, these videos can be easily used as Public Service Announcements (PSAs), shared on social media, or featured in trainings and presentations.

New Mobile App for Providers Coming Soon

Safer prescribing at your fingertips. Download the Opioid Guide App today. www.cdc.gov.

CDC’s new Opioid Guide App will make it easier to apply the recommendations in the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain into clinical practice by putting the entire guideline, tools, and resources in the palm of your hand.
The mobile app is free, and will be available on both Android and Apple devices. The app’s features include:
An MME Calculator - Patients prescribed higher opioid dosages are at higher risk of overdose death. Use the app to quickly calculate the total daily opioid dose (MME) to identify patients who may need closer monitoring, tapering, or other measures to reduce risk.
Prescribing Guidance - Access summaries of key recommendations or link to the full Guideline to help you make informed clinical decisions and protect your patients.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) - To provide safer, more effective pain management, talk to your patients about the risks and benefits of opioids and work together towards treatment goals. Use the interactive MI feature to practice effective communication skills and prescribe with confidence.

Additional Guideline Resources
Additional tool and resources are available and can be found on CDC’s web site, including:
We hope that these new tools make the Guideline easier and more efficient to use as we work together to protect the public from the devastating effects of prescription opioid misuse and overdose.
