Officials in Vietnam's northern province of Quang Ninh have disposed of more than 2500 ducklings which were seized in a smuggled cargo from China, Vietnam News Agency said.

The ducklings, estimated to cost more than VND17 million (USD 750), were seized from a Vietnamese truck [Wed 29 Mar 2017] and the driver said they were taken in from China but failed to produce any legal transaction documents, the report cited market inspectors in Quang Ninh as saying.

The driver, who also owns the shipment, has been fined VND8 million (USD 351.60) while the ducklings were buried, the report said.

Vietnamese laws stipulate that any illegal goods have to be destroyed by crushing or burning. Last year [2016], Quang Ninh customs made global headlines when they destroyed around half a ton each of live cats and chickens smuggled from China.

The Vietnamese government has ordered strict control over poultry smuggling across the land border with China, where the deadly bird flu virus H7N9 has been rampaging.

Bird flu outbreaks in poultry have recurred in Vietnam in recent months. The H5N1 virus is active in Mekong Delta's Can Tho City, its neighbor Hau Giang Province and the central province of Ha Tinh while the nearby Quang Tri Province is dealing with a H5N6 virus outbreak, the government said in a statement earlier this week [week of Sun 26 Mar 2017].

A locality is defined as free of bird flu if no new infection is detected within 21 days.

[Viet Nam currently experiences the spread of 2 avian influenza virus strains, affecting backyard poultry holdings throughout the country: HPAI H5N1 and HPAI H5N6.

The HPAI H5N1 event has been subject to an immediate notification and 7 follow-up reports. The most recent reports were submitted on 22, 25 and 28 Mar 2017, adding 4 new outbreaks to the previous 9, bringing the total to 13. A map showing their respective locations throughout the country, from the Chinese border in the north to the country's southern tip, is available at http://www.oie.int/wahis_2/public/wahid.php/Reviewreport/Review/viewsummary?fupser=&dothis=&reportid=22895

Since the start of the HPAI H5N6 event on Sun 12 Feb 2017, 3 outbreaks were reported, all in backyard poultry holdings. The most recent one, in the central province Quang Tri, reportedly started on Thu 9 Mar 2017. The locations of all 3 are presented in the interactive map at http://www.oie.int/wahis_2/public/wahid.php/Reviewreport/Review/viewsummary?fupser=&dothis=&reportid=22899.

No human cases have been reported, though both HPAI serotypes H5N1 and H5N6 are known to be zoonotic. For WHO's risk assessment of H5N6, please see 20161212.4689184. - Mod.AS
