HRSA awards $7M to workforce programs to combat Zika
July 26 - HRSA awarded approximately $7 million through two workforce development programs to combat the Zika virus and meet the health care needs of people living in Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. As of July 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 36,828 cases of Zika acquired through presumed local mosquito-borne transmission in these areas.
“These U.S. territories are geographically isolated areas that continue to tackle Zika,” said HRSA Administrator George Sigounas, MS, Ph.D. “Today’s awards will assist health professionals already serving in these affected areas payback their academic loans and help other local health professionals acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to address the unique needs of their communities.”

National Health Center Week August 13-19
This National Health Center Week we recognize the nearly 1,400 HRSA funded health centers, operating approximately 10,400 delivery sites, across our country. For millions of Americans, community health centers are the key to affordable, high-quality, and patient-centered primary health care. Health centers use a holistic approach to patient care, treating the entire person by integrating behavioral health, oral health and primary care services. Whether it’s controlling diabetes, high blood pressure, treating depression or childhood obesity, health centers exceed the national average. Their important work to protect and promote the health of America exemplifies this year’s theme: “The Key to Healthier Communities.”

BHW releases a curriculum to train primary care workforce about dementia care
More than five million Americans live with Alzheimer’s Disease and one out of every three people will die from it or another form of dementia.
A new HRSA-funded training curriculum addresses a growing need to train the primary care workforce about dementia care. The 16 core module curriculum and supplemental tools can be used by health professions faculty, students and primary care practitioners and promote interprofessional teamwork in caring for dementia patients.

Students to Service Loan Repayment Program
The National Health Service Corps’ (NHSC) Students to Service (S2S) Loan Repayment Program will be accepting applications soon. The NHSC S2S LRP provides up to $120,000 in tax-free loan repayment awards to medical students (MD and DO) and, for the second year, dental students (DDS and DMD) may apply as well.
Students must be in their final year of school and will serve a three-year commitment in an underserved community. Upon completion of their primary care residency training, recipients begin practice at NHSC-approved sites across the nation.

HRSA Administrator applauds rural hospitals
Dr. George Sigounas awarded Outstanding Performance citations to 10 states for improvements to their Critical Access Hospitals. Supported by the agency's Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP), the hospitals are often the only health care available in small-town, rural America.
“Critical Access Hospitals may be limited in resources, but they have strong connections to their community and a commitment to quality care for every patient that is reflected in their effort to meet higher standards," Dr. Sigounas said this week, in citing top-performing states for investing their FORHP funding in quality improvement projects and technical assistance to member hospitals.

Opioid use, misuse, and overdose in women
July 19 - The HHS Office on Women’s Health (OWH) released the Final Report: Opioid Use, Misuse, and Overdose in Women.
The report examines prevention, treatment, and recovery issues for women who misuse, have use disorders, and/or overdose on opioids.
This new report seeks to inform further research on opioids and women.

CDC updates interim Zika guidance for health care providers caring for pregnant women
CDC has updated the interim guidance for U.S. health care providers caring for pregnant women with possible Zika virus exposure in response to:
Zika virus cases were first reported in the Americas during 2015–2016; however, the incidence of Zika virus disease has since declined. As the prevalence of Zika virus disease declines, the likelihood of false-positive test results increases.

Quarterly CMS/HRSA Low-Income Health Access Open Door Forum
Get the latest CMS changes affecting safety net providers at the Quarterly CMS/HRSA Low-Income Health Access Open Door Forum, to be held on Thursday, August 10, 2 – 3 pm EDT.
This month, CMS presenters will discuss changes for Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and Rural Health Clinics (RHCs) with beneficiary assignment to Accountable Care Organizations under the Medicare Shared Savings Program, care management in FQHCs and RHCs, updates for the 2018 physician fee schedule and the latest on the Quality Payment Program.
The Forum provides an opportunity for a dialogue between CMS and safety net providers such as health centers, rural health clinics, critical access hospitals, and other 340B safety net providers.
