Assessment of automating safety surveillance from electronic health records: analysis for the quality and safety review system.

This research team of clinical and computational experts assessed the feasibility of identifying adverse events from electronic health records in an automated fashion. Investigators found that about one-third of the questions considered by human record review could be easily automated using current computational techniques. The authors noted that abstracting patient safety information from electronic health records is challenging due to variation in how data is represented across different electronic systems.
