Hurricane Harvey: HRSA is ready

HRSA Administrator Dr. George Sigounas discusses preparations for the response to Hurricane Harvey
In the midst of one of the worst natural disasters in recent U.S. history, HRSA Administrator George Sigounas told senior staff Wednesday that every bureau and office in the agency must brace for appeals for help that are sure to come in the days, weeks and months ahead.
"We cannot underestimate what the needs are there," he said, "in damage, costs, or expenses ... the expectations are high because HRSA is the agency with the people and resources on the ground" to help communities inundated by Harvey, one of the most crippling storms ever to hit a major U.S. metropolitan region.

HRSA has awarded the health departments in Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands $1,050,000 to address the additional needs of women, children and families who are or may be affected by the Zika virus. The funding supplements $17,000,000 granted to the territories in December 2016.
Zika infection during pregnancy can possibly cause serious birth defects, especially affecting the neurological system. The awards reflect HRSA’s long-term effort – in collaboration with other U.S. government partners – to respond to this public health threat, prevent its spread, and aid affected people.

New Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program National Curriculum: HIV/HCV Co-infection

HIV/HCV Co-infection: An AETC National Curriculum
A new, free, online curriculum offers healthcare providers and health profession educators training on HIV/Hepatitis C (HCV) co-infection, including prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations. HRSA's Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program’s AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETC) National Coordinating Resource Center developed the evidence-based curriculum.
An estimated 20-25% of people living with HIV in the U.S. are coinfected with Hepatitis C. “People who are coinfected with HIV and HCV are a priority population for HCV prevention, diagnosis, and treatment because liver-related death is common among this population,” observed Corinna Dan, R.N., M.P.H., Viral Hepatitis Policy Advisor in the HHS Office of HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Policy.

"One in 12 people across every U.S. state and territory rely on health centers to be their source of health care," HRSA Administrator George Sigounas said this week in an HHS blog post.
