ONC Annual Meeting
Thank you to everyone who attended last week’s annual meeting either in person or via the webcasts! The two-day event was full of productive conversations about achieving interoperability and reducing provider burden through health IT. The webcast recordings of the plenary sessions on both days as well as the Trusted Exchange Framework & Common Agreement session are now available for viewing. We will be posting presentations from the breakout sessions before the end of the year. Stay tuned for more information.

NEW Tool: API Education Module
The 2015 Edition final rule includes several health IT certification criteria that support patient access to, and patient-directed transmission of, their health information, both of which can be built through the use of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). ONC has created an interactive API Education Module to help providers and consumers learn how APIs work and how they can be used in helping improve that access to information. Check out the API Education Module.

New Content: Health IT Playbook Update
The Health IT Playbook includes two new chapters on the Opioid Epidemic and Behavioral Health. The opioid chapter includes a guideline for prescribing opioids for chronic pain and resources for Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMP). The behavioral health chapter features a new educational module for behavioral health providers and multiple resources for patient engagement as it relates to behavioral health. ONC has developed a variety of patient matching projects focused on improving data quality, achieving higher interoperability, and delivering safer healthcare. This webinar will provide an overview of the design and outcome of each of those projects, including lessons learned and best practices for patient data capture and record matching.

Payer-Provider (P2) FHIR Taskforce
ONC is in the process of establishing the new Payer-Provider (P2) FHIR Taskforce. Through this task force, ONC aims to gather information from highly motivated health IT payers and health care organizations to identify infrastructure and ecosystem solutions that could accelerate the adoption of HL7 FHIR between payers and providers. Using a tiger team approach, this taskforce will focus on leveraging existing resources and best practices to develop practical, consensus-based solutions to infrastructure and ecosystem barriers and conduct demonstration projects. If you are interested in learning more or directly supporting the work of the taskforce, email ONC.TechLab@hhs.gov.

ICYMI: Interoperability Proving Ground (IPG) Update
The Interoperability Proving Ground (IPG) was launched by ONC as a collaborative site to advance interoperability across the country. Since its creation, the IPG continues to evolve. The latest update, the IPG Spotlight, announced at the 2017 ONC Annual Meeting, highlights active interoperability projects to stimulate and inspire future collaboration. Each week, a new project will be featured on the IPG homepage, highlighted in the ONC weekly email update, and shared on the ONC twitter account.
Projects can be featured on the IPG by submitting a new project at the IPG, or by updating the status of an existing project within the last 90 days. TOMORROW: HHS Opioid Symposium & Code-a-Thon
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is hosting an opioid Code-a-Thon tomorrow Wednesday, December 6, 2017. Data scientists, computer programmers, researchers, public health experts, and innovators are being challenged to develop data-driven solutions to help combat the opioid epidemic. There will be three prize opportunities up to $10,000 each – one for each challenge track. Learn more about participating in the Code-a-Thon.
