FDA OMH Celebrates MLK Day

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

Undoubtedly, Dr. Martin Luther King was one of the greatest leaders of our time. He worked tirelessly to help unite our nation and to bring justice and equality for all. This time each year, we honor his legacy and celebrate his birthday by reflecting on the sacrifices he made. These sacrifices have allowed us to continue his life's work on moving the needle forward towards achieving social justice and health equity.

His legacy is alive in the work we do today. We work towards creating a world where health equity is a reality for all. And, even though, we have made great advances in improving medical treatments and decreasing complications from chronic illnesses -much still needs to be done in closing the health disparities gap. Many racial and ethnic minorities continue to bear the burden of chronic, debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, heart disease, and asthma.

As we reflect today, we want to live by his words, "life's most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?" As public servants, we work daily towards achieving health equity. We do this by working with diverse stakeholders to implement strategies to address the most pressing health issues, supporting research on minority health and health disparities, and developing health education materials and programs that are culturally and linguistically appropriate for the people we serve.

We strive to honor his legacy by empowering minorities to be able to make educated decisions about their health. Let Monday be a day of service and learning as we take time to reflect on the extraordinary work Dr. King has done to bring justice and equality for all.
