National Patient Safety Goals.

The National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) are a critical method by which The Joint Commission promotes and enforces major changes in patient safety. The Joint Commission regularly revises the NPSGs based on their impact, cost, and effectiveness, in order to ensure health care facilities focus on preventing major sources of patient harm. Major focus areas include promoting surgical safety and preventing hospital-acquired infectionsmedication errors, and specific clinical harms such as falls and pressure ulcers. In recent years, revisions to the NPSGs have included new measures to improve the safety of hospital alarm systems. Revisions to the NPSGs in 2018 are relatively minor, but they include the extension of some requirements for hospital-acquired infection prevention to nursing facilities in addition to hospitals.
