HRSA recognizes champions of rural health

February 28, HRSA acknowledged seven rural organizations from across the nation as champions in providing high-quality access to health care in rural communities.
“Rural organizations are well positioned to deliver effective and innovative care to their communities, impacting some of the most vulnerable populations,” said HRSA Administrator George Sigounas, MS, Ph.D. “These organizations are an essential part of the health care system because they understand their local communities, are able to fill significant health care gaps and ultimately improve the quality of life for those living in rural America.”
Notice of funding opportunity: Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program FY 2018 Part C Capacity Development Program (HRSA-18-051)
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) Part C Capacity Development Program recently released a notice of funding opportunity.
The program aims to strengthen organizational infrastructure to respond to the changing health care landscape and to increase capacity to develop, enhance, or expand access to high quality HIV primary health care services for low income, uninsured, and underserved people living with HIV.

Save the date: National Patient Safety Week celebration
Join HRSA in celebrating National Patient Safety Week on Tuesday, March 13. This year's theme is United in Mission to Ensure Patient Safety.
HRSA is leading the effort with participation from the Bureau of Health Workforce, Bureau of Primary Health Care, Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, HIV/AIDS Bureau, and Maternal and Child Health Bureau; as well as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Indian Health Service.
A live-streamed panel discussion is held from 1:30-3:00 p.m. ET. Participants will be able to ask questions. This is an exciting opportunity to discuss how HRSA and HHS are addressing patient safety in the ambulatory care setting.

Behavioral health virtual job fair
HRSA is hosting a Virtual Job Fair for behavioral health professionals on April 11. Over 100 organizations recruiting for 1,000+ behavioral health vacancies will be online to describe their clinical environments, the populations they serve, and the rewards of providing care in their communities.
Heart health for the heartland
While there has been a marked decline in deaths from cardiovascular disease among men and women in recent years, new research reveals a need for greater clinical sensitivity in diagnosing such cases across discrete populations, according to a HRSA Region 7 webinar earlier this month.
Nearly 50 percent of all Americans have some form of the condition, and risks are highest in racial and ethnic minority populations, reported Cardiologist Annabelle Santos Volgman, M.D., of Chicago's Rush University Medical Center.
Volgman provided a detailed breakdown of the latest research on heart disease, best practices in prevention and treatment, and common clinical myths that continue to complicate diagnoses.

HRSA's HAB partners confront opioid threat

HRSA's HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB) met with leading academic, clinical and research experts earlier this month to discuss the spread of the virus among IV drug users.
"It's happening already," said one HAB partner at the February 1 meeting, echoing other attendees who recounted increasing cases of co-infection among opioid users across the country.
The bellwether case of rural Scott County, Indiana — which experienced "an explosive spread of HIV in a very short period of time" in 2015 — established the epidemiological pattern. Most of those infected were injecting prescription opioids — crushed and dissolved — when they contracted the virus, the CDC reported.
