Caring for our Military: Considering Nondrug Therapies for Pain

Save the date! On June 4, 2018 at 11 a.m. ET, we invite you to this Integrative Medicine Lecture, presented by Mary Jo Larson, Ph.D., M.P.A., Senior Scientist, The Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University.

Dr. Larson will provide an introduction to the U.S. Military Health System and the treatment of pain in that setting, including recent innovations. Trends include movement toward a culture of pain awareness, expanded use of nondrug treatments, and a full continuum of best-practice pain services. These changes are in line with the report of the Pain Management Task Force convened in 2009 by the U.S. Army Surgeon General, which provided more than 100 recommendations on a holistic, multidisciplinary, and multimodal strategy to manage pain. Dr. Larson will also discuss her research study funded by NCCIH on the characteristics and clinical needs of U.S. Army soldiers returning from deployments, the types of treatments (drug and nondrug) that they receive, and the associated outcomes.

The lecture will take place in Lipsett Amphitheater, Building 10, NIH Main Campus (Bethesda, MD). A remote viewing option will be available.

NIH Seeks Input for a Future Geroscience Summit

If your organization is interested in research on health conditions of elderly people, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) wants your input in the planning of a major upcoming event.

This Request for Information (RFI) asks nongovernmental groups (e.g., researchers, disease and aging patient advocacy organizations, professional societies, and others), to provide input into the planning for a future Geroscience Summit, designed to explore the contributions that geroscience can make to relieving the burden of chronic diseases and their impact (e.g., loss of resilience and frailty).

Responses to this RFI will help the NIH GeroScience Special Interest Group (GSIG) to better understand the goals of diverse nongovernmental organizations, and how discussions and collaborations around the topic of geroscience (facilitated by the Summit) can help all interested parties accelerate their research-related activities.

Responses must be received by June 1, 2018.

Alzheimer’s Disease Supplement to Existing Grants

NCCIH and other NIH agencies are cosponsoring a new administrative supplement sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. The supplement will expand existing awards that are not currently focused on Alzheimer’s disease and its related dementias to allow them to develop a new focus on these conditions.

Administrative supplement requests must be received by June 8 for funding in FY 2018.
